Vacancy Description

The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead is seeking to appoint an Independent Person. The role of an Independent Person is to help promote and maintain high standards of conduct by Borough, Town and Parish Councillors.

The Independent Person will work with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead’s Monitoring Officer and provide objective and impartial views on complaints about Councillors’ behaviour. This will be the majority of an Independent Person’s work. He/she will, more rarely, be a member of the Panel advising the Council on matters relating to the dismissal of the Council’s Head of Paid Service, Chief Finance Officer and Monitoring Officer, as required by statute.

The role would suit someone who has a keen interest in local government and standards of behaviour.

Prospective applicants should have experience of public sector organisations, good analytical and communication skills, be contactable during working hours and be available to attend hearings or meetings at relatively short notice with the Monitoring Officer, which may be held during the daytime or evening.

An allowance of £1,000 per annum will be paid. Travel and parking expenses will also be paid.

If you are interested then the Monitoring Officer would like to hear from you.

However, you cannot be appointed if:

a.) you are politically active;

b.) now, or within the past five years, you have been a Member, Co-opted Member or Officer of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead;

c.) now, or within the past five years, you have been a Member, Co-opted Member or Officer of a Town or Parish Council within the area of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead;
